“Lord, what can I do to be closer to you?
How do I know what you want me to do?
I’ve tried real hard to do what is right
But I still can’t get to sleep at night.”
“Surrender it all to me,” he said,
“for you do not know what lies ahead.
I will guide you all the way,
Just try to do as I say.”
“But how can I do so when it’s so hard,
I’ve trusted before and have been quite scared.
I’m comfortable keeping what I’ve got,
every thing, every person, every thought.”
“It is those things that are holding you back.
Until you give them to me, you will lack.
For it is I alone that will meet your needs,
not your material things or your deeds.”
“But God, I am scared of losing it all.
What if I’m not strong enough and I fall?
Will you still protect me when I’m weak?
Or is making me weak what you seek?”
“When you are weak and I am strong;
It is in my arms where you belong.
Your trust in me will carry you far,
farther than your fancy car.”
“Show me how Lord, it is all I ask.
Show me what is hiding behind this mask.
I do want to be made new in you,
but I am afraid of what you’re asking me to do.”
“Fear not, my son, for I have a plan;
One that cannot be altered by a mere man.
I am the only way to safety, I hope you see.
Your future life fully depends on your trust in me.”
“I can’t help but believe in what you say.
You are telling the truth; you are the way.
So, I surrender my life for you to mold.
I can’t wait to see my new life take hold.”
“You have made the right choice in me,
For with me alone you were meant to be.
Surrender takes time and may cause pains,
but the wait will bring you greater gains.”
“Thank you Lord for all you’ve done,
but I know your work has just begun.
I can’t wait to see your work in me.
I’m glad you came to set me free.”
