Have you ever felt stuck – unable to get ahead? What did you do to change that? Did you continue going down the same path that you started on hoping that something might change?
Many of us fall into this trap. We get ourselves caught up in bad habits, nowhere jobs, or bad relationships and wonder why things never seem to work out the way we want. Everyone around us is doing well; advancing in their careers, getting married or staying out of trouble but for some reason, we can’t get ourselves out of the mess we entered.
Now before I continue, just because everyone around us seems to have everything together doesn’t always mean they do, they may just be good at hiding it. But for those that do, how do you think they got that way?
Well, they found a good path going the right direction and they stuck with it.
Do you know how incredibly hard it is to get ahead when you continue to go the wrong way? Some may even say it is impossible.
So what should you do?
How about turning around? This may mean you have to go through some of the same mess you already went through, but if you want to get ahead you must be going the right direction. You don’t get to the top of the mountain by digging yourself a hole. So why would you expect to get anywhere in life by continuing to do the things that brought you down?
So how do you do this?
The first step is to resist. This is often one of the hardest steps because you must come to a point where you finally realize you are going the wrong way and be willing to turn around. This is your choice as it is your life that you want to change.
If you are in debt, the first thing you must do is make the decision to stop spending. If you keep getting in bad relationships, the first thing you must do is end the relationship you are in. If alcohol is ruining your life, resist taking that next drink.
After you have made the decision, you must identify the problem. What is causing you the pain and suffering that you are experiencing? Why are you having such a hard time overcoming those things even though you know they aren’t good? Is there a deeper issue that has led you down this road of self-destruction?
When you have identified the problem areas, the next thing to do is seek help. For some people, this can be done through a book, some people may need a friend or family member to help them, while others may need more professional help or support groups. Life challenges aren’t meant to be tackled alone so don’t even try. If it were easy to do yourself, you probably wouldn’t be in the mess you are in any way.
Sometimes you need these people to help you with the previous step. Some things we do in life, we don’t even know why we are doing them. They may stem from something that happened to you as a kid, or they may be habits picked up from parents or friends. Whatever the case, the more you can find out about the cause of your actions the more likely you will be able to tackle those issues and make the changes you seek.
After you have sought help, you must buckle down and be ready to face some difficult challenges. This may be in the form of mending relationships you may have ruined in your misdirection, or it could be trying to rebuild your self-esteem so you will believe you are worth more than previously believed. If you were way in debt because you spent too much, this may mean a period of time where you can’t buy things like you used to. If you were stuck in a dead-end job, your challenge may be that you have to quit and find a new job somewhere that hopefully has more advancement opportunities.
No matter what challenged you face while trying to turn around, just remember you will eventually get through them if you persist. Then you will be well on your way to the better life that you have been wishing for.
If you continued going the wrong way hoping something would change without making the change yourself, you would have just been digging an even bigger hole for yourself and would have made it that much harder to get out.
Use your support system to help guide you through the challenges and to make sure you don’t give up and take the easy way out. The good things are worth fighting for and the reward for your efforts will be well worth the pain it may have taken to get there.
So don’t delay, make your first step today.
